Talita's basketball journey began almost by chance, guided by the persistence of Coach Dumisan from Khayelitsha. At around 13 or 14, he urged her to give basketball a try, even though she was already playing netball. "Since I used to play netball, which is very similar to basketball, the transition wasn't that hard," she recalls.
Initially hesitant and unfamiliar with the game, her spark grew once she started training under Coach Ndzuzo, who focused on building her fundamentals — drop-steps, post moves, and finishing at the rim. What began as curiosity quickly turned into love for the game, and today, when asked about her favorite move, Talita smiles with the confidence of someone who has truly found her rhythm on the court.
The Trip That Changed Her Mindset
After just two years of playing basketball, her growing talent earned her a spot on a team of girls who traveled to the United States with African Grassroots Hoops to attend basketball camps. "The trip to America was amazing, it made me realize I needed to take basketball seriously," she says.
In 2019, at just 18, she experienced a defining moment. The team took part in clinics rather than competitive games, still developing their skills, but watching other players perform advanced moves opened her eyes to a higher level of play. She returned home determined to train harder, refine her game, and chase excellence. The trip became a turning point that transformed potential into purpose.
